There are a multitude of great rock bands out there, if you want to truly gauge the genre, or rather, some of its best.
"Heresy" - Pantera
"Revolution Is My Name" - Pantera
"Hangar 18" - Megadeth
"The Grand Conjuration" - Opeth
"Beneath the Remains" - Sepultura
Again, it all depends on what you prefer. Both genres have the good and the bad, and have a multitude of sub-genres. I cannot really make any comments on rap, because I know very little about it. I have always preferred rock.

At least people don't use it as a sub genre for an entire genre.

Rock, by a looooooooooooooooooong shot.
although there are some types of rap i can appreciate. i'm not sure if anyone has brought it up yet since i didn't read the whole thread, but how would you classify Linkin Park? it's very rockish, but has a few elements of rap in it as well.
all personal opinion i suppose, i love music in general but rock will always be close to my heart.

I like elements of both. Rapping is fine as long as it has some sort of meaning rather than boasting. And some rock inspired stuff, not hardcore rock and screaming. My personal genre of preference is Electro such as Justice.

You have hardly listened to enough rap music. Never judge a genre of music by the popular crap that you get in the charts, such as Eminen, Nelly and 50 Cent.

I can't, I don't want to and I won't satisfy your needs in any way, nor am I responsible for your fantasies.

Despite being mainly a (Progressive) Rock & Electronic listener, it all depends on the artist to me.
There's bad rock, there's good rock
There's bad rap and there's good rap
Most mainstream rap saddens me though, the "Gangstah" subsulture in particular, makes me gag :>

Pantera and Megadeth are awesome. I'm a big time Pantera fan from CFH on. I'm not willing to accept pre-CFH as pantera. Metal Magic? Hell NO!
I also dig on Damage Plan, Hatebreed, Five Finger Death Punch, Dethklok (funny metal band) and some other stuff thats a bit softer like tool. doesn't mean I won't bump "Boats and Hoes" as loud as I can during the day though.
As for rap? I like some, but I gotta tell ya, most of it is complete garbage. Egotism, running down women and greed. I'd rather listen to nails on a chaulk board than most rap.

Glad to see some fellow fans popping up. Remember this? Awesome stuff! Was never really a big fan of Testament, but I do like them.
"Bleed" - Meshuggah - For those of you who want to try something a little unique.
I instantly fell in love with Math Metal because of Meshuggah, all those years ago. I do not listen to them that much anymore, but I still like them.
"Nemo" - Nightwish - Just had to throw some Nightwish in here.
